It may be time for a promotion— or at least, it might be time to start thinking about one!
One newsletter reader recently responded to my request for feedback on this newsletter (thank you!) and said she'd like more career advancement tips. So, here's one of my favorites:
?? Tip of the Day
Don't assume you'll get a promotion just because you're doing great work or because you've been at your company for X number of years. Be your own best advocate and let your manager know you'd like to move to the next level.
I still remember hearing a story a former coworker at LinkedIn told me years ago that has stuck with me. When she went to her manager asking about when a promotion might happen, he said that he had been waiting for her to bring it up and had assumed she was happy where she was at. He hadn't known she was interested in moving beyond her current role! ??
Moral of the story: Say something if you want it, and don't assume others know (this is general good life advice I like to follow as well). And in our virtual environments, we have the benefit of being able to write out a script if we get nervous. Take advantage of it!
???? Have a question or topic you want covered in a future newsletter? Leave a comment — I read every one (seriously)!
