Are you ready for the launch of GDPR?

Are you ready for the launch of GDPR?

Some excerpts extracted from Michaelsons, a recognised and leading IT law firm in Capetown

May 25th is just around the corner, which means your business needs to be ready to comply with the General Data Protection Regulation(GDPR). As international data privacy standards evolve, it is important to understand how this impacts any organisation that collects, manages and uses data. All users, not just those in the EU, will have the same data privacy rights. The GDPR was adopted by the European Parliament in early 2016 and is matters to any company anywhere in the world that stores and processes data.

South Africa’s data protection law, the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) was enacted in 2013. What does the GDPR mean for the POPI Act? Is the POPI Act going to be amended? Must you comply with both of them? And, if you do, does POPIA create any extra compliance requirements on an organisation in addition to what the GDPR requires? What happens if there is a conflict between them? And if you have been busy with a POPI Act compliance project, what should you be doing differently? Which one should you be doing first?

The good news is that the GDPR and POPIA are simply different flavours of data protection laws. They are actually quite similar to each other.

SOIT Business Solutions, along with other organisations, large and small, believes that data privacy is a fundamental right and that the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) as well as POPIA are a crucial step forward in protecting that right.

The advent of cloud solutions has left some sceptical about this fundamental right. How are you ensuring compliance in safeguarding your clients and employees’ data?

In partnership with other IT solution providers such as Microsoft (Office 365, CRM Dynamics 365), ClickDimensions, Sophos (Intercept X), SolarWinds (Managed IT Services), SOIT Business Solutions is ready to partner with you with proactively safeguarding this data in the following ways:

  • Show how you can use GDPR and POPIA fundamentals to assess and manage your compliance risk.
  • Discuss how you can help protect your customers' data with built-in, intelligent security capabilities.
  • Cover how you can meet your own compliance obligations by streamlining your processes.
