Are You Ready to Grow?

Are You Ready to Grow?

BED Talk 201 is about growth.

Most of us say we want growth but are we really doing the things that lead to growth?

Yes, many of us pursue knowledge in the form of new ideas, information or even perspectives.

We read books, listen to podcasts, watch TED Talks, take classes, participate in training programs and take in knowledge, BUT what do we do with all of this knowledge?

Knowledge is worthless without action or shifts in behavior and thinking.

Action is vital to moving forward and it requires accountability – self-accountability.

We sometimes engage a coach to help us with accountability so we can follow through on the new actions.

But even knowledge plus action is not growth. It’s just new action on different knowledge.

Growth happens when we combine knowledge plus action PLUS self-awareness and self-honesty.

We must become more self-aware of our thinking, blind spots, triggers and patterns, and this often requires outside feedback and being fully open to that feedback.

That’s another reason we engage a coach – to help us become more self-aware and better understand what drives us, including the old stories we’re living by and through.

All the knowledge and new action in the world won’t necessarily create your new story – your more authentic story of who you are and what you’re capable of.

That’s what growth is all about, and growth is often messy, scary and even painful. And it’s certainly uncomfortable.

But here’s what I know to be true – great discomfort always precedes great outcomes and impact.

It’s just part of the deal. If you want to grow you’re going to have to be uncomfortable and vulnerable.

I guess that’s why we have so much knowledge and action without new outcomes – because we weren’t willing to do the messy and uncomfortable work of personal growth (the inside job that really matters).

If you’re looking to amp up your personal growth in 2021, let’s have a conversation.
