This question has been on the minds of most Professionals since the Covid-19 breakout. The uncertainty in the job market has force each one of us to thing, how can we stay relevant. It's a big jolt for most of us programmed to do a specific kind of role year after year as we move up the Career Ladder. After all we have invested heavily in our skills and knowledge over the years and we thought that as long as we upgrade ourselves we would always be relevant, right? A sound assumption till Covid-19 took the economy on a downward spiral. Covid-19 crisis has not been selective in its impact to different industries. While some industries like Hospitality, Travel and Entertainment has borne the majority of the impact, yet High Tech Industries like Data Sciences, IT and Software and even Consulting has not be insulated either. All of a sudden Professional Networks like LinkedIn are flooded with resumes (exceptional ones) looking for the next Job. It is high time we think about the Gig Economy. A stable job may or may not be coming soon, but that must not stop us (brilliant minds) from taking a Gig and survive this difficult time. It may or may not give the best return for your talent, but one thing for sure, it is surely going to alleviate your mind from the depression associated with the rejection letters or anxiety associated with no response received. Besides, a small remuneration at the end of the day or week or month will do a lot to your self confidence. Even if you still hold your full time job, taking out a few hours every week to do something for your own is not going to hurt your professional life. On the contrary, your talent, skills or work ethics might land you much better opportunities than your current day job.

The Corporates 'New Normal' Dilemma

It would be interesting to find out how many times a Corporate Manager hears or uses this term a 'New Normal' every day. Now, Program Managers have to execute Programs at a third of the cost. Project Managers are lucky to get half the staff due to Social Distancing. Getting fresh skilled resources is a luxury that no Company can afford. Under this 'New Normal' a ray of hope lies in the Gig Economy. Talent is available, so is skill and expertise. What is lacking is a System of Trust between the service providers and service takers.

The Gig Economy is not exclusively for freelancers or fly by night contractors. It could be very well created within the pool of employees which you were forced to let go due to economic consideration. It could be someone who was associated with your business like a sub-contractor's employee who is looking for an opportunity right now. They may carry valuable knowledge, insights and skills to execute your work without a long term commitment. And many would prefer a contractual position to a Golden Parachute given the volatility of the job market.

Now comes the true part of the dilemma. Once a company decides to take a plunge, are the Corporate Systems tuned to operate in such an environment? When closely managed and monitored Projects misses deadlines and budgets, how does one commit on Projects when there are external service providers working on? What about Information Security and Confidentiality? There are hundreds of reasons for not going for Gig Economy. But if you have work and a time by which you have to get it done, the 'New Normal' is to find Solutions.

The last few months have seen a sea of change in the approach to work. When Work From Home, became the 'New Normal' the hard-nosed corporates were forced to provide employees access to their data centres (with VPN where possible). Most of Corporate meetings are still taking place over Video Conferencing using some third party tools. If that has become the 'New Normal' - why can't the Gig Economy?

The IT Systems have to be opened up just enough to allow externals have access to information, necessary for performing their job. It would be an additional and critical responsibility of the Gig Manager to act as the Information Security specialist and audit the information security logs for his/her hires.

Next comes the quality of the output. To get the best output, the Hiring Manager need to under stand and break the work in milestones. By associating payments subject to the completion of job and meeting the quality standard, one is expected to get a better quality output. The other significant benefit is, if for any reason the requirement gets changed, either party has an option of re-negotiating the work and payment milestones.

Very nicely written. The subject is most relevant in these times. To add a bit, an important skill required could be the ability to decompose/break down a requirement into sub-tasks or even micro tasks based on the underlying platform/technology/expertise etc. This could provide many potential benefits, some obvious ones being more granular (hence accurate) estimations and tracking. Moreover it can also help address the Information Security aspect by limiting access to data on a need-to-know basis.
