Are you ready for a digital leap forward with SLcM?

Digital transformation has been high on the agenda of companies worldwide in recent years. If we take stock of the situation today, has that transformation lived up to the high expectations? Opinions on this differ, and I believe that semiconductor companies still face some fundamental challenges.

The pandemic forced semi companies to focus on making product at all costs.?It also illustrated the difficulties of working across a global network of fabs, subcons, assembly/test sites and OSATs, without a single source of truth. The various sources of truth prevented companies from shifting production across their complex supply chain, limited material substitutions, and caused quality issues that eroded yields of the few available materials.

When it comes to their digital transformation strategy, semiconductor companies have had three areas of focus: ERP (enterprise resource planning), CRM (customer relationship management) and PLM (product lifecycle management). In my experience, most companies focus on ERP and CRM, because traditional PLM systems haven’t provided much value in the semiconductor domain.

While ERP and CRM are key components of digitalization, they lack the ability to provide the environment for authoring and managing the complexities associated with semiconductor specific master data. Semiconductor Lifecycle Management (SLcM) serves as the glue that connects NPI, IP creation and usage, simulation-driven package design, and the gaps between design, smart manufacturing, and enterprise quality.?This is a high-level strategic leadership decision to unleash the value of SLcM across the enterprise. It is one of the three change-enabling cornerstones.

As market growth returns to "normal," I'll spend the next few months to expanding this blog to discuss how we got here, semiconductor lifecycle management (SLcM), increasing requirements to support the data explosion around multi-chip modules, and the need for enterprise quality management to support Quality 4.0.

It is ironic that the manufacture of bleeding Semiconductors is often produced with stone age digital assets except for the few that embrace the value that the current generation of solutions can deliver.
