Confidence is a fascinating topic, one I explored in depth in my book a few years ago. It's a conversation that seems to pop up everywhere.??
I recently found myself chatting with someone about joining my dance group to learn to dance. Despite his excitement about dancing, he felt overwhelmed by the idea of actually trying it, intimidated by the other people there who he presumed would be far better than him.
Similarly, when I spoke with my 13-year-old about performing a song she wrote, she shied away from singing it in public, even though she’s no stranger to performing.??
My clients often face this hurdle too, whether it’s starting a new business, writing a book, charging their worth, or making major life decisions. It’s clear that confidence—or a lack thereof—can stop anyone from moving forward, no matter who they are or what they do.
Self-confidence is about how you engage with the world, whereas self-esteem is more internal and focused on your relationship with yourself.?
Having self-confidence describes the feeling when you believe in your capabilities and when you trust that you can handle whatever task or situation might come your way.
It’s when you feel good about yourself and have a positive attitude about who you are as a person and where you fit into the world ??
Self-confidence empowers you to take on new challenges without fear of making mistakes, because you trust your ability to try and aren’t held back by other's opinions.
It plays a crucial role in your emotional well-being and it can significantly impact both your personal and professional life.?
My personal current challenge is learning to lead in???Brazilian dance?? after 20 years of following. Running the Brazilian Forró community in Brighton leaves me with no excuse not to!
It’s definitely a big challenge, but I refuse to let a lack of confidence hold me back.
For those battling with self-doubt, starting something new can feel like navigating a minefield of negative thoughts.
Henry Ford once said...
“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right.”
This resonates deeply with me.
Don’t let your mind convince you of failure before you even begin.
Building self-confidence is about seeing every new challenge as a chance to swim rather than sink.
So, what new experiences will you dive into before the end of 2024? As we transition into a new season, consider how you can continue to embrace new adventures.
I’d love to hear about your journey with confidence and the steps you’re taking to push your boundaries.
To your health,
Jules
