Are you ready for the CCPA?
Are you a business with users, customer, or contacts in California? If so the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA)will impact you, and is already in force. If you get it wrong then the financial consequences can make the GDPR look trivial!
The CCPA went into full effect on January 1, 2020. and gives California consumers broad new privacy rights including the right to ask that any business disclose to them what personal information they hold about them or their household, the right to direct a business not to sell their personal information, and the right to request that a business delete all collected personal data. The CCPA applies to relevant businesses that process personal data about Californian consumers irrespective of where the business is based. Penalties apply per breach (i.e. per piece of data, per Californian impacted) and can quickly escalate for large scale breaches
As with many personal data protection regulations, the legalisation can be complex to understand. For an easy to digest explanation of how businesses can get ready, please see my article in ITProPortal
