Are You Ready to Break the Cycle?
Courage is what it takes to stand and speak, courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen – Winston Churchill
This edition is going to be all about mental health and wellness in our culinary community, and why it's gonna take all of us to finally address the elephant in the room and start normalizing these conversations.
There's an old adage that states that, “I teach what I need to learn.”.
While that may be true, the reason I beat the drum of mental and physical wellness in the hospitality industry is that I need the reminder just as much as the next person.
Over the years, I developed a pretty thick skin and that meant that sharing my “troubles” with anyone but the bartender was always a potentially dangerous thing for me….
I mean, what if the word ever got back to my teammates or my boss?
What would they think of me? Someone might be emboldened to take advantage of my weakness and throw me under the bus to gain my position.
“Say it ain't so, Joe.”
As you'll read in my latest blog post, Breaking The Cycle of Hospitality Mental Health Ignoranc e, ignoring the pain only works until it doesn't.
And then what?

There's a reason why it makes sense to become your team's mental and physical health advocate, and it's for all the right reasons.
Today I'm also including links to some great articles worth your time along the same topic:
Mental Health Resources for Diners (now there's a switcheroo)
Find Dinining Lover's take on the current mental health crisis for chefs.
The NY Times on a study about why all these new mental health workplace interventions haven't yielded the desired results.
Surprise, surprise, surprise, turns out that all the benefits in the world won't make up for a shitty work environment and a crappy workplace culture.
?
That's the work people: for this industry to be profitable and sustainable we're going to have to come together and work towards the common goal of co-creating a hospitality culture that serves us all - one that is equitable, diverse, empowering, and compassionate.?
Are you up for that? I know that you are.?

Podcasts that I'm listening to:
It's clear that Christin is on a mission and her show is maturing with every episode. I, for one, am really excited for her, and the show's potential.

Your voice does matter, but only if you use it.
What I'm currently working on:
Traning my Adam Bot.?
Yup, I'm training a ChatGPT model to write in my “tone of voice” by feeding it a bunch of stuff I've written over the years, so I can leverage the technology to help me provide better value through my content.
Will it ever replace me?
Nah, no matter how much I train it, it'll never be as handsome and clever as me. Or maybe one of those is true….
We all need to embrace these emergent technologies, they're not going away - might as well use 'em to the best of our ability.?
Lastly, what I'm reading (or listening to - I love Audible):
I read this once a year to stoke the fire in my belly; the other Pressfield book I always recommend to others is The War of Art.?
Pick up either one in whatever format you like better and get tuned up for 2024.?
Here's to your sustainable success!
?
Until next week, stay tall and frosty ya'll,
Adam
