Are you ready for 2025?
By this time I assume that you have already set your objectives for 2025 and know what you want to achieve, but have you properly thought through how to get the outcome you want?
Influencing policy decisions requires a comprehensive understanding of the policy process, key players involved, and the issues at stake for various stakeholders. Planning backwards from the outcome you want to achieve will significantly increase your chance of success
I use a seven-step approach with my clients
1. Define the outcome
Start by clearly defining the outcome you seek. It could be a measurable goal, such as specific legislative content, or a qualitative objective, like improved reputation with a specific stakeholder group. Be aspirational but also realistic, breaking multi-year projects down into annual outcomes.
2. Identify key decision makers
Determine who holds the power to deliver your desired outcome. Go beyond generic entities like ministries or authorities and pinpoint the specific individuals or functions responsible.
3. Outline steps and activities
Work backward from your desired outcome and map steps and associated activities, identify key milestones.
4. Understand how activities are carried out
Gain a deep understanding of how critical activities are conducted, both formally and informally. Know the formal processes, as well as any unwritten rules, and identify key consultative stakeholders.
5. Define strategy and tactics
Develop a clear strategy with clearly defined metrics for your tactics.
6. Execute, including internal communication
Implement your strategy, including an internal communication plan to ensure alignment and support within your organization
7. Calibrate and improve
Continuously evaluate and refine your approach based on insights gathered during execution, use feedback to improve strategy and tactics.
By following this structured approach, you can effectively define your desired outcomes and develop a strategic GA plan to achieve them. Remember, success in government affairs requires careful planning, proactive engagement, and ongoing adaptation to changing dynamics.
