Are You Putting Out Enough Content?

Are You Putting Out Enough Content?

I have noticed many posts with pretty much the same title, subject or theme - Daily posts about daily content, and are you doing enough?

Begs the question, enough FOR what? – Enough OF what?

If I go through the articles I have posted over the last 5 years a lot of the content is mind splurges of what my meandering brain conjured up during that morning’s commute – sometimes the article would even be about the day’s commute.

In no way do I think I am a LinkedIn “ninja”, “guru”, “inspirer” or “rock star” – actually, I don’t even know what those titles mean-

I thought Bon Jovi was a rock star, a Ninja was a character in Mortal Combat and the only Guru I was aware of was the chap the Beatles hung out with in the 1960s.

Looking at the statistics of my views and numbers who have bothered to click and actually read the articles, the numbers range from 7 for some articles 2000 for others. Strangely the subject matter mostly reads the same – “recruitment”, “sales” – “office” pattered with general meanderings and my own drivel, mind farting that floats into my head, and adding it up, there have been nearly 100,000 people in total that have read these. I am left asking the question why?

Further, why am I even writing this? Narcissism that somebody could be bothered to read it? Egocentricity? That I know people are thinking about me? Or perhaps, I feel I have been in the industry so long I have information to impart?

Probably a combination of all the above, plus in lockdown there were evenings when I had my 1 hour outdoor exercise, had done all my colouring in, done my weights and exercise bike spin and needed something additional to occupy my mind other than Tiger King!

It was when I started posting these articles I would get private messages – this is “insightful” or “don’t post this it’s too controversial”, etc. Made me think, all this stuff about content, engagement, blah ya da, does this really amount to business, profit, money through the door- absolutely not =  LITERALLY NO BUSINESS!!!!

You know what does? COLD CALLING!!! You know why? Because you actually build relationships and moreover, that all important “engagement” with clients.

Let’s put it this way – Client A, reads my drivel likening recruitment to bodybuilding, Client B, receives a cold call informing them of a highly relevant and niche candidate coming to market – Who of these clients is likely to be the most engaged? I think we know the answer –

Why would reading an article about how body building and recruitment are so similar, (in my mind that is) result in a client coming to me with a job vacancy? Let’s face it, that wouldn’t

Now, that’s not to mean that specific content for content creators, advertising executives, social media managers, marketers etc. does not engage clients and create business. The opposite, these articles, posts etc. are surely a portfolio or examples of their work and the very fact you are reading them provides a display of their expertise.

I however do not work in the content creation sector and so know that my real business development within recruitment comes from the telephone (now a dying method of communication outside the text message) and in particular phone sales! Ed Wolf Hunter I am not!

So my opinion is that the 10,000 plus cold calls I have made that has made me successful or the countless articles on recruitment and bodybuilding? Let’s put it this way, if this article gets more than 4 views and a job on then I will be astonished, but happy to be astonished-

Signing off and please look out for my next article: “How Drinking Protein Shakes Helped Me Win More Business”
