You ARE a Project Manager!

You ARE a Project Manager!

As a project management trainer having taught over 2,000 people by now, I've heard this statement a thousand times:

"Oh Crystal, I'm not a project manager yet. I don't have the job title."

But when I hear about all the work they do, I'm like, "um, yeah, you are a project manager."

Below is an excerpt from my book I'm writing, "Crystal Clear Project Management" (I just love that title):

When we talk about being a project manager, it's important to recognize that project management skills are not exclusive to a specific title or profession. In fact, you may be a project manager under a different name. There are several different names and titles used for project managers, depending on the industry, organization, and context. Here are some common alternatives:

  • Project Coordinator
  • Team Lead
  • #ScrumMaster
  • Delivery Manager
  • Engagement Manager
  • Implementation Manager
  • Consultant
  • Analyst
  • Executive Assistant
  • Customer Success Manager / Lead
  • Account Manager
  • Operations Manager (can include project management responsibilities)
  • Business Analyst (can include project management responsibilities)
  • Change Manager
  • Stuckee

I am so excited about this book and I plan to keep sharing snippets with the #projectmanagement community to get your feedback.

For now, I'd love to hear what other titles you've held or encountered that embodied the responsibilities of a project manager. Share in the comments section!

WOW WOW WOW I am so glad you are writing this, Crystal! Maybe it's an opportunity to get our job titles changed. There is no way that 'Project Manager' fits our work - especially in 2023. Managers oversee/supervise direct reports, and we don't just 'manage' (as in "get by"), we GET STUFF DONE THROUGH OTHERS, through inspiration, through influence, through (dare I say it) Crystal Clear Charisma! That is not management. That's Leadership. We're Project Leaders. I have a lot to say about this in my courses, and your book is a way to persist in that message. Glad to contribute. Cheers and good luck in your adventure in book writing! Rich
