Are you Procrastinating or are you Percolating?

So many of the entrepreneurs and professionals that I speak to each week are struggling with procrastination, but things are not always as they seem.

Did you know there are different types of Procrastination?

That we Procrastinate for different reasons.

That in the short term, we benefit from it.

That much of what we do is subconscious & habits.

What is procrastination?

According to the Oxford dictionary, it's the act of 'delaying something you should do, usually because you don't want to do it'. It can be traced back to a 16th Century Latin?word 'procrastinat' which means?‘deferred till the morning'.

Why do we procrastinate?

This week in our weekly Productive Wellbeing Clubhouse Room Dr Rowshanak Hashemiyoon , a computational and behavioural neuroscientist talked to us about Intentional and Protective Procrastination and the science behind it (send me an email if you want the replay).

Below are 5 more reasons you might be procrastinating

  1. Avoid having to make a decision/take an action
  2. Avoid making a mistake (perfectionism)
  3. Need more data - don’t know what to do/how to do it
  4. Too busy to do it/get started
  5. Work better under pressure

What is percolation?

It is the state I find myself in before I sit down to complete a task on my to-do list.

Some people might call it active procrastination, or mental preparation.

It's a period of time when from the outside it might look like I am procrastinating, but on a subconscious level my brain is queuing everything up.

When I sit down to work I enter what Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi called Flow State and I become fully immersed in what I am doing. It's also the same experience that Cal Newport talks about in Deep Work.
