Gartner predicts By 2024, modern privacy regulation will blanket the majority of consumer data, but less than 10% of organizations will have successfully weaponized privacy as a competitive advantage.

Fifty percent of chief information security officers (CISOs) will adopt human centric design to reduce cybersecurity operational friction; large enterprises will focus on implementing zero-trust programs to drive enterprise decision making, according to the top cybersecurity predictions revealed by Gartner on March 28, 2023.

Here are some key aspects of the future of data protection:

Stricter Data Privacy Regulations: Governments and regulatory bodies around the world are likely to continue enacting stricter data protection regulations. For eg, the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). New laws and amendments are expected to emerge, creating a more complex regulatory environment.

Enhanced Encryption: Encryption will play a crucial role in data protection. As computing power continues to increase, encryption algorithms are likely to become more robust, making it harder for unauthorized parties to access sensitive data.

AI and Machine Learning for Security: Artificial intelligence and machine learning will be increasingly used for threat detection and prevention. These technologies can analyze vast datasets in real time to identify unusual patterns or anomalies that may indicate a security breach.

Zero Trust Security Models: The Zero Trust security model, which assumes that no one inside or outside an organization's network can be trusted by default, will gain more prominence. This approach emphasises continuous verification and authentication, reducing the risk of unauthorised access.

Data Protection by Design: Businesses will increasingly adopt a "data protection by design" approach, integrating privacy and security measures into their products and services from the outset rather than as an afterthought.

Biometric and Multi-Factor Authentication: Traditional username/password authentication is increasingly seen as inadequate. Biometric authentication, such as fingerprint and facial recognition, as well as multi-factor authentication (MFA), will become more commonplace.
