Are you playing the victim in your business?

Are you playing the victim in your business?

Before having my daughter Frankie, a friend asked me ‘what part of being a dad are you most excited about?’

“I’m most excited about teaching her about life” I replied…

How wrong was I…

This little ball of joy, love and STRONG emotions has taught me more than I could ever have imagined…

And her most recent lesson to me was highlighting when I play the victim...

A hard pill to swallow as a High-Performance Coach.

But hands up… it's sometimes true.

And Im grateful to Frankie for raising my awareness of when I am.?

I’ll give you an example…

Just this weekend, Frankie was down for a nap...

And after making a quick lunch I put on my fave music, made myself a coffee and cozied up on the sofa to read a book…

You guessed it….

“WAAAAA WAAAAA”

A screaming Frankie!

My immediate reaction…?

“Of course this happens now” “Can’t I just have 30 minutes to myself” I muttered to myself under my breath

Now had that been angled at an adult, who has an awareness beyond them, it would be easier to blame them right… there could be some malice behind their actions.

But at that moment I was blaming my innocent (jet-lagged through our own doing) daughter!

Not cool!

And had I stayed in that victim mentality I would have moped around resenting my innocent daughter, who owes me nothing!

Buuuut… I caught myself, reframed, took responsibility and got present.?

Now… you may be asking… what has this got to do with building a coaching business…?

Well, how often do you find yourself playing the victim in your business?

Blaming the economy.

Holding resentment against potential clients that are now ghosting you.

Blaming the algorithm. Or your content not being understood.

Comparing yourself to others and putting their success down to luck or outside forces.

Getting angry that people don’t invest in themselves like you are.

Notice though…

All these lack the innocence of a young child, so they are far more believable and easy to let slide.?

But every time you blame or play the victim you are handing over your power. You are shirking your responsibility.?

As a coach building your business, you will get punched in the face....

Rejections. Content bombing. Being ghosted. Clients not paying. etc etc...

But DONT go punching yourself in the face straight after and blame your circumstances...

Instead…

Hold up the mirror and ask yourself what your role was in this. And what could you have done better?

And in the case of my daughter not having the nap that I wanted...

My role was flying her to Canada in January so she was jetlagged, and my annoyance was created by my expectations.

The lesson...

Accept. Learn. Let go. Move on.

Big love,

Joel
