Are you planning a great 2024?

Just watching the news at the moment you could be forgiven for expecting more of 2023 in the year ahead. More extreme weather events, leading to more displacement of people around the world, leading to more social unrest and more conflict - or at the very least no let up of the current ones.

Hopefully your work environment isn't quite as turbulent as that but whatever you are facing in 2024 as a? leader, at any level, in any organisation, your role is to be proactive and plan for both the challenges and the opportunities that will come your way this year.

If you have (wisely) stayed out of the day to day weeds this week and allocated some time to planning here are my top 5 books for planning the year ahead. The links are to make life a bit easier for you not affiliate links for me.

1. Finding your own North Star - Martha Beck

A top down approach, perfect if you want to know where you are going in life. Searching for your purpose (or that of your organisation) is a much wider topic and deserving of a separate list but on an individual basis this is a great place to start. Beck has worked with Oprah Winfrey, her writing style and inclusive approach will suit you if you follow anything that Oprah as done over the decades.

2. Getting Things Done - David Allen

Arguably the polar opposite of the first book - this is for you if your 'purpose' is clearing the tsunami of incoming e-mails, meeting requests and status updates that greet you every time you open your laptop or phone. This is by far the best (IMO) 'bottom up' approach to planning your day to day productivity. You can have all the vision and purpose in the world but if you are still clearing mail at 11pm every night you aren't going to get anywhere.

3. Atomic Habits - James Clear

Billed as 'life changing' it really is. A more philosophical approach to how to set goals and what works (for you) compared to what doesn't. It's both revealing and a little frustrating to be over 50 when you finally realise why some things have just never quite happened for you. Read this now - literally the sooner the better.

4. The Miracle Morning - Hal Elrod

This was recommended to me by the great Ally Gordon as a go to start on getting your life and habits under control. Not quite as brutal as the 5am club - and considerably easier to follow, this is about taking control of the (only) time in your day that most people can call their own - small children aside. Doesn't need to be followed slavishly but the more habits you do the better you feel - honest.

5. Your Best Year Yet - Jinny Ditzler

Another recommendation - this from Nick James and Nicki Vee Master Relationship Coach - that I have adopted as an annual process that includes reviewing the year just passed and looking for the lessons learned from what went wrong as well as celebrating the things that went well - nearly always more than you think. This is last in my list not because it is the least but because it brings together every aspect of the books above. Your big picture vision, your day to day challenges, and your daily habits and routines - all summarised into a simple A4 sheet ( of goals and plans for the year ahead - try it ... you can thank me later.

Whether you read all, one, or none of these I wish you all the very best for 2024.

Happy New Year Jeremy. Thank you for the mention and recommendations. I have lost count of the number of people I have recommended or sent The Miracle Morning to, strangely, quite tough to get hold of these days. A couple of close friends and I do Your Best Year Yet every year over dinner, perfect way to set up the year. Just ordered the first two!! Have a great start to year Jeremy, we are due that lunch soon....

An interesting list of books, Jeremy. "Getting things done" sounds very interesting and the one I should start with.
