You are not perfect but for a moment you might be.

No day is perfect. Things can go well at times. But the day isn’t perfect. You didn’t sleep well. You ran out of creamer for your morning coffee. Zoom froze during your part of the presentation. The client chose the other agency. You had a fight with your spouse. Your kid rolled their eyes at you. The dishwasher broke. Dinner got burned.
No day is perfect.
We’ll pretend it is. On socials, at least. Friends will ask how things are going and we’ll say “Great!” because small lies are far, far easier than the truth. And so we hide away, fingers crossed, praying that God gives us a moment. Just a moment. A day feels impossible. But God, give us a perfect moment.
856 feet. That’s how far.
That’s a long way. Almost three full football fields. That’s a long distance to attempt a basketball shot. But over 25 hours spanning four days, the guys from Dude Perfect made it. The shot of a lifetime, 856 feet in the air. A world record.
If you don’t know who Dude Perfect is, picture five dudes you went to college with, maybe frat guys, all doing stupid trick shots. Now picture them recording those shots, putting them on a YouTube channel, then making millions of dollars from it.
It’s stupid. It’s crazy. It makes people (me, mostly) extremely jealous.
But it’s not perfect. Because these trick shots are never successful the first time. This latest record-breaking stunt? It took 900 tries.
ESPN recently released a 30 for 30 documentary on Dude Perfect. It was a great behind-the-scenes look at the men and the history of the group. One moment in particular stood out to me.
In the episode where they’re performing trick shots with NBA superstar Luka Doncic, the Dallas Maverick breaks the biggest Dude Perfect rule: don’t practice the shot without the cameras rolling.
Luke does this twice. Dude Perfect frontman Tyler Toney playfully fusses at him both times. The reason is simple: if you make the shot while just practicing and the cameras aren’t on, who’s to say you’ll make it again?

I know what you’re thinking, and you’re right. You’re not Luka Doncic. The chances of you making a half-court shot with your back to the basket is highly unlikely. But what if you do? What if you do, and no one knows it?
Worse: what if you don’t even try?
No day is perfect. But yes, a moment can be. 24 consecutive hours of perfection probably won’t happen. But a few minutes? Sure. Why not? You’ve experienced it before:
“I asked. And she said yes!”
“We’d like to offer you the job.”
“Congratulations! It’s a girl!”
“We want to make an offer to purchase your book.”
“Hey, Dad. I just wanted to say I love you.”
We’re all looking for a perfect job, perfect marriage, perfect kids, a perfect life. It’s impossible. Even if your job is hanging out with your college buddies shooting basketball all day, it’s not perfect.
But when the moment is perfect, don’t hide it. Let the world know. Roll the cameras. Those moments are ones you’ll remember forever. It might take 900 shots. It might take 900 rejections. It might take 900 no’s. But don’t give up. Keep shooting. Keep trying. Keep going.
Nothing is perfect. But one moment might be.
