Are you a People Pleaser?
Are you a People Pleaser?

Are you a People Pleaser?

Do you often find yourself bending over backwards to ensure everyone else is content, pouring energy into fulfilling others' happiness at the cost of your own?

People-Pleasing everyone but ourselves! ??

This urge to always please people can emerge from a craving for acceptance and approval.

When we prioritise making others happy over tending to our own needs, we're not just being kind; we're sidelining our well-being and values.

This tendency shines even brighter for those of us who feel a bit different or "weird". Our people-pleasing dial doesn't stop at seven or eight; we crank it up to eleven. (yes, that's a little homage to a certain cult classic.) ??

How much value do you give away for others' approval?

But this heightened level of people-pleasing doesn't just drain us mentally, emotionally, and physically; it also has a significant imprint on our business.

Consider how often we extend our boundaries to deliver excessive value to our clients, driven by an inner fear of disapproval or rejection.

This overextension can lead to us doing more work than compensated for or allowing our professional boundaries to be crossed.

Accepting and putting up with drama clients who sap our time and energy while not valuing us.

All because we fear they might not like us, or worse, they might walk away. ??

This was a topic I brought up during a recent networking discussion about delivering client value.

The wide-eyed reactions confirmed I wasn't alone in being a people-pleaser.

Yes, providing value is essential, but not when we undervalue ourselves in people-pleaser mode.

And think about it—how many times have our good intentions been exploited, leaving us feeling undervalued and reinforcing that cycle of seeking approval through pleasing?

Striking a balance is crucial.

It's about setting and respecting our own boundaries and understanding that declining requests doesn't reduce our dedication and care.

It's valuing ourselves and our work properly and maintaining professionalism.

The first step towards change?

Recognizing why we act this way with our clients.

This week, take a moment to reflect on your client relationships. Ask yourself if you're giving too much for the wrong reasons.

Awareness and honesty are your first allies in navigating away from the people-pleaser trap towards healthier, more balanced interactions.

If you struggle with this in your business and would like to know more, then let's have a chat. If you are looking for an unconventional speaker on this subject, I could be the person you are looking for.
