With everything going on in the last 10 days, I’m talking to more and more people talking about things that matter and things they have no control over. Was the attempted assassination of Trump an inside job, does Biden have dementia, who will replace Biden for the democrats, and will Kamala ever quit laughing? Certainly, to some, these are important questions.
After listening to really smart people ponder these questions I am reminded of when I had lunch with Dr. Stephen Covey. Dr. Covey wrote the book Seven Habits Of Highly Effective People. I finally pestered enough people in the Mormon faith until I found someone who could arrange a lunch with Dr. Covey who was a Professor at BYU. Once he agreed to have lunch I flew there for that express reason.
My biggest takeaway from lunch was when he wrote two circles on a sheet on paper and wrote CAN in one circle and CANNOT in the other circle. He shared that all of the attention and effort I spend in the CAN circle (can have influence on the outcome) is time well spent. Conversely, all of the attention and effort I spend in the CANNOT circle (cannot have influence on the outcome) is wasted energy. It really is that simple.

I cannot add anything other than opinion to the conversation about attempted assassinations, who the democrats will nominate, the price of milk or many other things people want to occupy their time with. I love the topic of politics and by its very nature, the topic is distracting and divisive. I spend very little time working toward these goals. Carefully considering what I choose to occupy my time with has benefits I cannot explain.
