I have taken to heart what so many leaders, chief people officers, and culture coaches are sharing with me on The Porch:
safe relationships at work =
more productivity + creativity
Why does it matter? Humans are primarily social.
Think of us like pack animals who have complex communication systems that run on emotional batteries and charge up the more we are connected to each other.
If our communication systems break down, or if we wonder if someone likes us or detests us, we’ll lose momentum and have trouble thinking clearly. The primary focus of our brain is social connection.
Just rewind in your own life for a moment: Remember how hard it was to perform at your peak in front of a disapproving teacher, coach, parent, or friend? We start fumbling when we feel disconnected or disapproved of.
My challenge this week is to practice curiosity instead of judgment.
This is how we build psychological safety moment by moment.
When I get frustrated, hurt, or when I’m about to blame someone, I’m going to take a deep breath and practice getting curious first.
I'll ask myself:
Do I know the whole story? What context am I missing? What question can I ask before I jump to conclusions right now?
Are you are up for the challenge with me this week? Follow along as we all choose to be more curious. I'll be checking in with you (if you comment below!)

3 年My mother taught me to "seek to understand before speaking." Not only has it helped in the sales process (yucky, I know, but essential to building business), but it's saved me from unnecessary drama with friends and family. I've noticed people are more likely to open up and communicate when they don't feel like they need to prepare a defensive response. My father thinks companies shouldn't be run by emotions and feelings... Granted, he's a military man, but I'm sensing a generational gap in thinking ??

3 年Yes! When I take the time/energy to slow down and get curious instead of immediately jump to conclusions not only is the outcome better but I'm a happier human for it and less tired from tackling a challenge.
