Are you overwhelmed with problems?

Are you overwhelmed with problems?

Are you overwhelmed with the weight of the world? Are too many problems weighing you down and making life feel heavy? Are you tired?

I heard this story on the Tim Ferriss podcast recently, and I found it quite profound for such a seemingly “simple” story.

The story goes like this (you can also watch the video below)...

Walking in the Countryside

Several novice monks are out for a walk with their teacher, a buddhist monk. They are walking along a country path by some fields. The teacher stops. He points to a large rock in the field beside them. He asks "Do you see that rock? Is it heavy?"

One of the novice monks looks at the rock. It is large. It is clearly heavy. He replies to the teacher: "yes, that rock is heavy."

The teacher pauses and then responds "Not if you don't pick it up."

Are you Overwhelmed with Problems?

It reminds me of another video that I made several years ago – on the most important lesson I have learnt in life. Here’s the old video (from Paris):?The most important lesson

The most important lesson for me is the Wisdom prayer of St Francis of Asisi…

Give me the strength to change the things I can change, Give me the patience to accept the things I cannot change, and Give me the Wisdom to tell the difference.

That's right Conor Neill. The weight of something does not matter, unless you try to lift it! And - as you quoted - the wisdom lays in the ability to discern what needs to be lifted. I'd also say to know when to put something back down.
