Are you Overqualified for the jobs you are invited to interview, or getting job offers for?

So, the job description is a match, the company size is ideal, and the location is perfect. However, applying for the job could be problematic, as you are overqualified.

Your main challenge will be reassuring the employer that you will not abandon the job as soon as something better comes up. So, in your job application and interview, you must validate the match and show interest and willingness to commit to the organization and the work itself. Indeed, be prepared to encounter genuine skepticism regarding your interest in the role.

How to manage this delicate conundrum successfully: You must choose which aspects of your career history to emphasize and which to minimize or leave out of the discussion that could set off alarm bells. As you renovate your resume to rise to this challenge, you may be tempted to downplay or leave off your advanced qualifications or certifications, but don't, as this will leave qualification proof point gaps in the resume flow.

The remedy is to put your education and certifications section at the end of the resume's body. Sell your skills and related experience first; the qualifications will be a backup. Try to keep the qualification and technology sections brief and factual. You do not need to trumpet your academic credentials; simply stating your degree (with dates and university details) without mentioning the grade or rank will be enough.

What if your Experience section looks like a who's who in your industry? If you have had several different roles, allocate the most space on your resume to those whose responsibilities are similar to those of the jobs you plan to apply for or those in which you utilized identical skills and tools. You can give details of your achievements during the interview.

Handling the stickiness factor: You do not need to declare or promise a lifetime of allegiance to the employer, but make sure you have a convincing (and honest) explanation for why you are interviewing for a job for which you may be overqualified! For example, as you summarize your match for the role, please include why you want the job or why the location is an outstanding fit for you, as it can fit in with other personal activities and family commitments, ferrying the kids to school, etc.

Practice answering the expected interview questions and formulating proper logical sentences. Make your sentences short and easy to document and repeat. Be judicious when presenting your achievements. Practicing your responses to expected questions will make you appear more at ease and believable!

Since you are very likely to get questions about whether you are aware that you are interviewing for a position for which you are overqualified, you can mention something about how you've enjoyed similar sorts of roles before and enjoyed leveraging key skills to add to the success of the projects. If asked anything else, talk about one of your traits that would make you a good fit for the benefits, such as the flexibility of work hours and the ability to enjoy what you do.
