Are you over the hype?

Does it annoy you too? "Last chance", "Final Call", "Final Days"....

It's that pressure to not miss out (FOMO). Take action now, or miss out.

It's a building block of selling in our times.

I was just clearing out my junk email folder. The more intense the call to action, the faster I seem to click "delete". Most I had already missed anyway due to the lack of frequency of clearing out my junk mail folder.

It got me to thinking though. The basics of ethical selling is a willing seller and a willing buyer - a meeting of needs. A win:win. So often though, it's a win for the seller and a lose for the buyer.

A colleague of mine often reminds us all that you need to "know, like and trust" somebody before you buy from them. It's true isn't it !?

My annoyance at all the selling AT ME, stems from the fact that I'm not ready to commit to all the many offers I receive. Maybe some are good. Maybe I have missed out on some huge opportunities to change. Or maybe not. I don't often have the time, or make the time to sort through all those offers.

So as I reflected, it got me to thinking further about change. How often do you think about change in your own life? What needs to change? How do you know when it's time for change in your life? Is change for you around what you DO want, or what you DO NOT want?

In my coaching work I often help my clients with these 4 questions, asked and answered sequentially:

1. What will happen if I do (insert whatever it is)?

2. What will not happen if I do (insert whatever it is)?

3. What will happen if I do not do (insert whatever it is)?

4. What will not happen if I do not do (insert whatever it is)?

When it comes to your own leadership role, how are you doing? Really doing, not the "doing" you tell your colleagues, friends, and family..... the "doing" that that inner voice of your talks to you about. Even maybe beats you up about.

I reflected on some favourite change related quotes....

?? Not everybody has the ability to be aware of the change required within. Your self awareness as a leader though knows when change is required. Your choice is do it all yourself, or seek help in doing it.

??Be the change you want to see in the world. Change comes with small consistent steps. What do you want to have? What have you got to do to have that? Who do you need to be in order to do it ? Those big dreams of yours require you to step up, be flexible and adapt to the challenge at hand. Change yourself, then change the world.

??What you did or didn't do yesterday is irrelevant today. What will you do TODAY to move you closer to your goal? Again, small consistent steps count.

??One change may not be enough. That one change though will open up other changes required. The shortest distance between 2 points is a straight line, but there are no (or rarely) straight lines in life. It's our ability to adapt that makes us so successful as a species.

??It was Henry Ford who said that whether you can or can't - you're correct. Your attitude governs your actions. Too hard? Ok, it is. Too hard for somebody else? No it's not. When we are merely interested, we do what's convenient. When we are committed - we do whatever it takes.

??Nothing changes, if nothing changes within us. Sitting in front of an empty fireplace waiting to get warm is pointless.

??A colleague of mine has just started coaching somebody on their last warning. The person has skill and talent but won't change their behaviour, instead expecting everybody else around them to change to accommodate their own unresourcefulness. If as a leader you aren't getting the results you need, is it only a matter of time before you jump or get pushed?

Over the coming festive period, you will chillax with friends and family and celebrate. Rest and play is an important part of a healthy life. In those reflective moments, when you are alone though, I encourage you to explore how you can be more in 2024. Be more. Achieve more. Live more. Even have more.

No final calls here. No final days. No last chances.
