Are you an Oscar?

Are you the "Oscar" in your workplace? Do you grumble in your life or are you pleasant to be around? I'm sure that we've all been Oscar the Grouch at some point in our careers.
There was a day last year when it was cold outside and I didn't want to take my books and set up at an event. I begrudgingly went and complained the whole way there. When I got there, it was cold. Then, a mom, grandma, a boy in a wheelchair and a girl approached my table. I gave them one of my Prayer Activity books. Little did I know that this would be the start of an amazing friendship. If I had not gone to this event, I would have never met Gideon. He and his family have become very special to me. Everyone has rough days, but remember to try to make the most of them. You never know who you'll meet on any given day. A year later, I was sitting in my couch struggling with how I was going to overcome a challenge that I was facing. Then, I glanced at Facebook to see that Gideon's grandmother posted thanking me for the prayer book and friendship. That made me forget about any troubles and inspired me to think positive and be thankful for the little things. I found out that he was in the hospital having yet another brain surgery so I took him a Go Vols Activity Book because he loves Smokey (or "Mokey" as he says). Gideon and his family attended my fighter party. The day after the party, he told his mom that he loved Miss Darla. WOW! If I wouldn't have gone that cold day to the event, I would have missed this amazing little angel and his family.
To inspire, you need an open mind. With an open mind, you are more accepting. If you are more accepting, you are more patient. If you are more patient, you are happier. If you are happier, you might get out of your trash can and inspire someone else to do something great. We all have a purpose and no matter how big or small we think our impact is, it is worth trying our best. Let's shut the lid on the Oscar in us and try to pull out the Cookie Monster instead. Let's all order cookies and give them to someone to brighten their day today. "Me want to give cookies."
