You Only Have One Life: A Reflection on Time, Energy, and Priorities
Have you ever felt like the universe was trying to tell you something? Lately, I've been surrounded by reminders about the fleeting nature of life and the importance of energy—where we place it and how we use it.
As a recruiter, I learned early that time is finite. Structuring my day to make the most of every moment became second nature. But as I've reflected, I've realized that while time is limited, it's also outside of our control. Instead of obsessing over how we spend our time, shouldn’t we focus on where we invest our energy?
Energy, unlike time, feels personal and finite. If, as science says, "energy is neither created nor destroyed," then we humans seem to operate in cycles—sometimes brimming with energy, other times running on empty. Since we can’t create more energy, the key question becomes: where do we find it, and how do we spend it wisely?
I've noticed my energy is tied to emotion. Highs and lows impact me deeply—my joy is electrifying, but my lows can be all-consuming. I suspect many people are the same. Realizing this, I’ve started to think about energy as an investment. Just as with time, energy deserves care. Where you place it, and whom you share it with, matters.

Relationships, whether romantic, platonic, or professional, require an exchange of energy. Sometimes you give more, other times you receive. But the balance is vital. In my field, where emotional highs and lows are common, my team supports each other to recharge and stay motivated. This dynamic reminds me that protecting your energy is as important as spending it.
So, as you navigate life, be mindful. Time is precious, yes, but your energy is the true currency. Invest it in people and pursuits that lift you up—and don't hesitate to expect a return on that investment.
Time is not the only resource people need to value – you matter more than time ever will.

3 个月This really hits a nerve Emma. I′ve been recently in a bit of a low and have noticed that exactly in times like this, that the energy saving mode kicks in (as you may have noticed). I always try to give it 100% percent at work and in private, and always be there with an open ear and heart for everybody around me... and yes, I have caught myself often enough and realised that I spend my time not always wisely and should look after myself a little better.. To see time and energy as an investment is a very valuable reminder. Thanks for that ??

3 个月Steven Bartlett has a great chapter on this in his 33 Laws book. If life is a poker table, you have a certain amount of chips to use and then its over. Its up to you where you place those chips where you want your time spent. The same is true of recruitment/sales. The day is long and if it is well planned, you can make the most of where you spend your time. Key question: what will move my business forward today and what activities can I do to achieve that? For myself, I tend to feel more burnt out when I am overwhelmed by the amount of tasks I have. When I am more organised, I feel more in control of my day, week and month and get more done as a result! Its easy to be pulled into another task, or if you haven't done what you expected in an hour slot to push the next hour. Try and stick to the plan! Also... as someone not too far past the start of a fitness journey, I can't emphasise the importance a workout a day has on your energy levels and mindset for the day ahead. I missed a workout yesterday and could feel it spill into my day!
