If You Only Had One More Day to Live

“Contemplate that each day is your life in miniature,” advises Srikumar Rao. “You are born when you get up in the morning. You die when you go to bed at night. This one day, what are you going to make of it? If you do that every day, you’ll be amazed at how much better your experience of life becomes.”

Srikumar is a lovely man, an author, former business school professor and creator of Creativity and Personal Mastery, a course designed to effect personal transformation. (It’s the only course I know of that has its own alumni association.)

He reminded me to resist the temptation to spend day after day telling myself I’m “too busy” to spend even a few minutes on the things that make me feel most alive.

For example, one of my priorities is to have a fantastic relationship with my husband and family. Even on the busiest of days, it is still possible to take 30 seconds to signal each person how much they mean to me. Do I do this without fail? No. Can I do better? Yes.

Other priorities for me are to spend time outdoors, and to stay physically fit. While most days I don’t have time for a big outdoor adventure, I can at least sneak out between Zoom calls to do 20 minutes of yard work, or take a walk.

When you look at each day as a microcosm of your life, you automatically seek to make your experience richer. No one I know would be willing to spend their last day watching TV or staring at their computer.

I’m not suggesting you spend less time working, only that you put more thought into the elements you want to be present each and every day. This simple exercise can have profound implications.
