Do The Truffle Shuffle

There are several events in Houston on any given night that will suit just about anybody?, one of those events that happens in the first quarter of the year is the Truffle Masters Competition benefiting Second Servings of Houston, Houston's only prepared and perishable food rescue organization. Think of Truffle Masters, as a culinary throw-down with one of the most expensive foods you can cook with, truffles.

Truffle Masters began in 2015 under the name “Truffle Charity Challenge“ and has been going on now on for four consecutive years…?This is my second year going to this event and I was just as impressed this time as I was the first go around in 2019.

If you are a self proclaimed foodie, or just like really good food, then Truffle Masters may be your ticket to taste bud heaven….Over 30 restaurants compete for the Title of Truffle Masters Champion and your taste buds will thank you every bite of the way?.

The 2019 Champion was Kata Robata, with head Chef Manabu “Hori” Horiuchi--Kata is primarily known for both its traditional and modern Japanese cuisine featuring some of the highest quality fish in Houston that is flown in from Japan multiple times a week?.

..and that’s just the tip of the Truffle Iceberg and your taste buds are the Titanic heading straight for it!

Other restaurants competing are some that you typically wouldn’t see truffles being served; restaurants ?ranging from Chef Alex Padilla from the Original Ninfa‘s on Navigation, to Chef Bobby Matthews from La Lucha in the Heights, Chef Lewis Roger from MAD/ BCN to some of Houston’s more notable restaurants such as Mastros and one of Houston’s newest, Killen’s STQ, from executive Chef Ronnie Kathleen known for his Killen’s Kountry BBQ.

The ambiance, is a people watcher‘s haven, as you can sit back, enjoy your amazing dish and watch young and old mingle with each other or you can jump right in and rub shoulders with not only some of the top food critics in Houston, but young and old professionals along with both National and Local TV personalities alike; most notably Megha Tejpal from the Food Network and Eric Sandler from CultureMap, to name a few.

The drinks flowed like the shavings of truffle that every competitor had on their table,? trying to earn that magical voting coin that was tallied up at the end of the competition.

If you’re looking for a culinary labyrinth for your taste buds, want an introduction to the taste of truffles, or looking to see what some of the most talented Chefs in Houston have to offer, then I would recommend going to the truffle masters next year!!
