You need to know these women.
Alabama is a state rich in history and brimming with potential, and at the heart of its progress are the women who dedicate their lives to shaping its future. We are proud to present the 2025 Women Who Shape the State honorees – professionals from across the state who are making a significant impact in their respective fields.
From healthcare to education, business to community service, these leaders exemplify the spirit of innovation, resilience and compassion that defines the best of Alabama. Each of these women has overcome challenges, broken barriers and inspired countless others along the way. Their accomplishments serve as a powerful reminder of the vital role women play in driving economic growth, fostering social change and building stronger communities throughout Alabama.
Move over, Walmart. This store has it all.
In the heart of downtown Camden is a sight hard to find these days -- a thriving, locally-owned hardware store -- and it’s all thanks to a young couple willing to take a risk and a community eager to welcome them with open arms.
When Katie and Lee Turner moved to Camden in 2021 with their three young sons, they had planned on opening a greenhouse business like the one they had in Virginia prior to relocating to Alabama.
That changed though when Jimmy Pugh, who had been running the Coast to Coast hardware store for more than 40 years, approached the newcomers about taking over its ownership. While Katie Turner said she was hesitant at first, they ultimately decided to trust their instincts and try something new.
The return of Cloudmont
After shutting down in 2020, Cloudmont Ski Resort in Mentone got new life and plenty of visitors recently thanks to a group of volunteers eager to see Alabama’s only ski slope snow-covered and open for business once again.
