#The Story of Lila and Her Unlikely Coach
Lila was a young artist with dreams as grand as the city skyline. She painted every day, pouring her heart into her art, yet each time she finished a piece, she was plagued by doubts. She’d stand back, tilt her head, and pick apart every flaw, whispering to herself, “This isn’t good enough. Who would ever want to see this?”
Her best friend, Maya, was her biggest fan. Maya always told Lila how talented she was and how her art made people feel. But it seemed that no amount of praise from others could quiet the voice in Lila’s mind that told her she wasn’t enough.
One night, Maya invited Lila to a local art show. The walls were adorned with vibrant, passionate pieces, each one carrying its artist’s unique fingerprint. Lila, however, spent the entire evening looking at the work with a mix of awe and envy, comparing herself to each piece, each artist. She felt small, almost invisible among so much talent.
When they returned home, Maya could see the sadness in her friend’s eyes. “Lila,” she said softly, “why do you talk to yourself that way?”
Lila shrugged. “I don’t know… It’s just the truth, I guess. I’m not as good as the others.”
Maya smiled and gently took Lila’s hands. “If I told you those same things, that you weren’t good enough, or that you’ll never be as talented as those artists tonight, how would you feel?”
Lila was taken aback. “Well, I’d be crushed. I’d never want to hear that from you.”
Maya’s words sank in. She realized that the harshness she showed herself was something she’d never dare to show anyone else. The next day, Lila tried something new. She stood in front of her easel, took a deep breath, and looked at her unfinished painting. But this time, instead of hearing, “You’ll never get this right,” she asked herself, “What would I tell Maya if this were her painting?”
The answer came easily: “You’re doing great, Lila. This isn’t perfect yet, but every stroke is bringing you closer to something beautiful.”
Day by day, she practiced this strange new habit of talking to herself like a friend. Each time self-doubt crept in, she imagined what she would say to Maya if Maya were the one struggling. Her inner voice became softer, kinder, and more encouraging. Her confidence grew, and soon, she found herself painting more freely, less afraid of making mistakes.
Lila’s art flourished in ways she’d never anticipated, and people began noticing the fresh spark in her work. She’d finally found the courage to put her pieces on display at a local gallery, proudly sharing her story, her art, and her newfound confidence.
#Key Takeaway
The transformation in Lila’s story teaches us a powerful lesson: The words we tell ourselves have incredible power. Often, we’re our own harshest critics, tearing down what we would uplift in someone we care about. By treating ourselves as we would a friend, we build a foundation of kindness and confidence that nurtures growth rather than stifles it.
The simple act of self-compassion can unlock doors we didn’t realize we had closed. Speaking to ourselves with the same encouragement we would offer someone dear reveals just how capable and resilient we truly are.
Imagine what you could accomplish if the biggest supporter in your life was you.
#One Question for You
What would change in your life if, for just one week, you spoke to yourself only with the kindness and encouragement you’d offer a friend?
