You need a community

You need a community, and here is why.

In high school, I was the epitome of introversion. I struggled to express myself, often feeling like my thoughts and opinions were trapped inside my mind. When my mentor, Professor Kristen Maher, suggested that I join PANA , I began to see a glimmer of hope for change.

Pana was more than just a community; it was a beacon of hope, a catalyst for change, and a sanctuary for those seeking connection and purpose. As a research, public policy, and community organizing hub, Pana was dedicated to advancing refugees' full economic, social, and civic inclusion in San Diego and across the US. The organization was a guiding light, inspiring individuals to step out of their comfort zones and embrace meaningful engagement with others. Initially daunting, I hesitated to join. However, taking that leap of faith proved to be one of the best decisions I've ever made.

My first meeting with the organization was challenging. I struggled to find my voice, to articulate my thoughts and ideas amidst a sea of passionate voices. But instead of being discouraged, I was inspired. Inspired by the unwavering dedication of my fellow community members, their commitment to making a difference, and the sense of belonging that permeated every interaction.

And then, an opportunity presented itself. The organization was searching for an outreach ambassador to bridge the gap between the organization and the broader community. Despite my reservations, I seized the opportunity with both hands. And it was a decision that changed my life forever.

As an outreach ambassador, I found my voice. I discovered a newfound sense of purpose and passion, channeling my energy into meaningful action and advocacy. I connected with people from all walks of life, forging friendships transcending language, culture, and background boundaries.

But perhaps most importantly, I discovered the true power of community. Through this organization, I learned that no challenge is insurmountable when we stand together, united in our pursuit of a common goal. I found strength in solidarity, courage in collective action, and hope in the knowledge that we are never alone, no matter how daunting the task may seem.

So, if you're hesitant about joining a community, please take that first step. Embrace the opportunity to connect, grow, and make a difference. When we come together as a community, there's no limit to what we can achieve, and you won't regret it.
