In 2009 Dan Pink presented this brilliant TED talk discussing the difference, values, challenges and success between intrinsic motivators and extrinsic motivators. He looks at extrinsic motivation where organisations using "carrots"and/ or "sticks" at motivators. Such as driving incentive based rewards (in the form of gifts or money) at the end of a project; or using anger or aggressive leadership style to drive work based tasks. He compares it then to intrinsic motivators in the form autonomy, mastery and purpose to drive organisational projects. For example a school in Bedfordview, South Africa calls its staff professional and trusts them to get their work done. They give them autonomy to choose when they enter the school gates as long as they are in class when the first lesson starts and are free to leave school then their last class in done. Work productivity, work quality and work satisfaction is high in this school environment, Teaching staff love working at their school. And Micro- management is not necessary.
Have a look at Dan Pink's Ted Talk "The puzzle on Motivation" and ask your self: How can our workplace start discussing what autonomy, mastery and purpose may look like for you?

5 年Baden you remind me of people who position themselves for SUCCESS. But I'm continually amazed at the number of people who don't take control of the direction of their lives by sitting down and writing their goals. If we position ourselves we can accomplish our goals and this may be one's single most powerful activity one can take to ensure an abundant life. Thanks brother for sharing this important information.
