Are you missing the AI wave?

Are you missing the AI wave?

As a water sports enthusiast with a passion for adrenaline-pumping activities, I' am a passionate kite surfer and tried my hand at windsurfing, stand-up paddling, and, of course, surfing. I'd like to share a straightforward analogy that resonates with me personally, which can help contextualise the ongoing AI revolution in a relatable manner: surfing.

Surfing is a thrilling sport loved by many Australians. But how do you catch the best waves and avoid missing out? It's all about timing and taking action. Waves come in sets that start small and grow bigger before subsiding for a while. You can ride the smaller ones, but they won't provide the same adrenaline rush as the larger ones. The bigger ones are usually the third or higher in the set. However, be careful not to wait too long, because you might miss the last wave and have to paddle back to shore – which is no fun at all. The best surfers know how to read the waves and don't hesitate to seize the moment. They don't wait for the perfect wave because it might never arrive. So, don't procrastinate – just surf. Otherwise, you might as well go fishing.

What does this have to do with AI, and where am I going with this?

Consider it this way: technological development and innovation come in waves. There are the Pre-Alpha and Alpha phases, which are fairly locked down and limited internally. These early stages are akin to the small waves that only a few skilled surfers can ride, preparing for the larger waves to come.

Then there's the Beta phase, where more features are introduced with increased stability, and more users join in. If you're fortunate enough to get onto a beta release, you'll gain a head start on many things. Just like catching a bigger wave, getting in on the Beta phase allows you to ride the crest of innovation before it becomes mainstream.

Following that, we may have another few rounds of Beta before reaching General Availability. During this time, the technology continues to mature, and the waves of innovation keep growing, attracting more users to dive in and experience the benefits of the emerging technology.

Currently, with Generative AI, we are riding the Beta waves. More surfers (users) are drawn to it (100 million and counting) and recognise the opportunity to ride the wave early, getting a head start on exploring its potential. With each successive Beta round, more users join in, creating a larger community that can collectively harness the power of innovation.

In essence, the message is clear: don't procrastinate with AI. Like surfing, it's crucial to seize the opportunity and ride the wave while it's here. Otherwise, you might find yourself paddling back to shore, watching the AI revolution pass you by. This means being proactive in learning about AI, implementing it in your business or personal projects, and staying informed about the latest developments in the field.

By staying ahead of the curve and embracing AI during its Beta phase, you'll be better positioned to capitalise on the transformative potential of this technology. As the wave of AI innovation continues to grow, those who have already adopted it will find themselves at the forefront of their respective industries, reaping the rewards of early adoption.

So, don't wait until it's too late. Be bold, embrace the power of AI, and ride the wave of innovation to new heights. The future belongs to those who are willing to take the plunge and seize the opportunities that lie ahead.

NB: To my kite surfing and wind surfing friends... This can apply the fickle nature of the wind too...
