You might think
That hiring as unemployment is increasing would be easier, and you'd be wrong.
Here's why:
Volume of people in the job market + poor job posts + poor interviewing = bad hire
There's simply more information to deal with, a bigger haystack if you will.
An unemployed person is a desperate person and will tell you almost anything. I've been there and I know the feeling.
A VP from California covering for her plant in North Carolina because her Plant Manager quit is also a desperate person. Her position is open, forever, (it takes a long time to read 1,000 resumes), she's missing baseball games and dance recitals and she's a long way from home. Eventually it's like she's so thirsty she'll drink anything!
And 6 months later she's doing it again. In the meantime, that bad hire has destroyed the plant culture (your HR person quit because the person you hired is a dolt, true story!) and made bad OTD worse.
I'd argue the value of a strong talent partner actually goes up in a worsening economy. Where you are a business leader, or an operations leader, we're interviewing people for a living, my customer and my product are both human beings.
We actually cut down on the volume for you, and evaluate talent for you, so you don't waste your time doing it. It's not to say we're judging job seekers, it's to say we're evaluating for a specific role. Not being a fit for Job B doesn't mean you aren't a fit for the company, it just means that isn't the right position.
Because we put all of our candidates through the same process, we're able to compare and contrast the skillsets and personalities.

But it takes a little bit of commitment on your end on the front end because you have to tell me exactly what you want for me to go find it. If I was a personal matchmaker and you were looking for a girlfriend, you wouldn't say bring me a woman. You'd give me some details.
I like to think about buying a car at CarMax , in Georgia, in August...it's about 478 degrees on that blacktop, and you come walking in in your flops and shorts telling me you'd like to go look at some cars...hold your horses pal, I'm going to need some details first.
And I'm going to ask you some questions, questions like:
- Are you looking for something specific?
- Are you married?
- Do you have kids?
- What will you use the vehicle for?
- What's your budget?
And after you answer all of those, maybe we'll narrow it down and we'll look at some of our inventory online, and you'll say I like that one. And we'll go out and look at it, you'll love it, you'll buy it, and we'll both live happily ever after!
We aren't going to go walk around burning our feet (and the top of my bald head) to look at the 600 cars on the lot. Maybe I wouldn't sell a lot of cars, I don't know.
But I do place a lot of people, and the most effective I am is when my clients tells me exactly what they're looking for.
So if you're looking to hire for critical positions, and wondering where to turn, let's discuss your options.
Good luck out there.
