You might be networking wrong. Here's a checklist for you

As a Young Entrepreneur, Civil society leader or Young professional, you've once been told that one great aspect for your success is networking. Is there a right or wrong way to network ? I'll say 'yes'.  

Networking doesn't just happen. It's a conscious decision which requires effort, strategy and patience. 

Networking does not means attending every single event in your neighbourhood or hanging around prosperous people. You could attend all events around your neighbourhood but still lack a network. Your network is made up of those people who surround you and who are able to pick you up or help you walk the path to your career or project success. 

How do you know you have a great network ? You can only know you have a great network if you have these four types of people in your network: 

1. The Linking Expert: 

This is that person who has the contacts and who is able to connect you to people relevant to your success. This type of person can also be called a connector because of its rich contacts. Don't get me wrong. It must not necessarily be a rich or influential person but someone in your field who can connect you to the right people. For example, you could be an Agritech entrepreneur who wants to be connected to farmers, buyers, and a larger market. You could connect with someone who could introduce you to those farmers or those producing organic manure etc. That's part of your professional network. 

2. The Influencer:

You need someone to influence you positively. This must not be someone you've met. Generally the Influencer is someone who inspires you by their actions, accomploshments or vision. Most often these are extremely successful people. They could be from your field or from a general point of view. How do you meet them to make them part of your network ? You can follow them on social media, follow them on LinkedIn, buy and read their books, watch their talks on YouTube and never miss an opportunity to comment or share what inspires you about them. Every ambitious person needs an Influencer. Who influences you ? As for me, Oprah Winfrey tops my list. Let me not name the rest. Who are your top influencers ? Share in the comment sector with me.
