You Might Be Done With Facebook, But the OG Social Media Platform is Far From Dead

You Might Be Done With Facebook, But the OG Social Media Platform is Far From Dead

With the rise of AI, chatbots and predictive text on smartphones, I want to get back to writing, without the assistance of these tools. My weekly LinkedIn article talks about marketing, the world of work and anything else that I think may be relevant to this platform.

Facebook Remains Immensely Popular, Even If You’ve Stopped Using it

I recently came across an article that discussed how Facebook is making a push to win back young (as in Gen Z) users. Meta is reorienting the app to focus more on Reels consumption. Vertical video is where it’s at in 2024 and if a platform (or marketer!) fails to adapt, it will descend into irrelevancy.

I have noticed that it has become fashionable among many millennials in Canada and the U.S. to ignore Facebook. Indeed, myself and many of my friends have completely stopped sharing personal updates to what was once the essential social media platform. We used to share 23 photos after a night out. Now we go 23 months without sharing anything.?

But even if Facebook usage has fallen out of fashion with millennials, the platform still has a great deal of value for the marketer.

Gen X and Baby Boomers love Facebook. These two cohorts have become the power users of Facebook. If the age 45 and up demographic is part of your target audience, you definitely want to be maintaining an marketing presence on Facebook.

It’s also important to keep in mind that Facebook remains extremely popular with international audiences of all ages. Spend time in Latin America or Asia and you will see lots of smartphones scrolling through the Facebook newsfeeds while you are waiting at the cafe or the metro station.

Bottom line: Don’t allow your personal social media browsing habits to dictate where you decide to cultivate your presence. Go where your target audience is, even if you’re no longer an active participant in that same space.

PSA: ChatGPT is on TikTok

Did you know ChatGPT has an official TikTok account?? They have just launched a new takeover series that is sharing tips and tricks to get more out of your day-to-day usage. If you’re looking to up your prompting skills and learn a bit while you scroll on social media’s most addictive app, it might be worth following.

Another sign of the Tiktokification of Social Media

Have you noticed that the YouTube app on your smartphone now defaults to opening up to the Shorts feed?

What Happens When You Ignore Your LinkedIn Profile

I was sick for a couple of weeks, so I didn’t bother posting anything to LinkedIn. Here’s what it looks like when you ignore your profile for a couple of weeks:

??????

Ouch! You will disappear very quickly and LinkedIn will be kind enough to let you know.?

It seems that posting once a week is a required minimum cadence to aim for. Any absence that last longer than that and your presence is pretty much non-existent.?

Staying on the topic of LinkedIn… I did not expect them to be hosting a Games section on the homepage.

Seems like a really weird offering for such a work-focused platform. I’m not a game guy so I haven’t bothered playing. Just a weird thing to see when I visit the homepage.

That’s all for this week!
