Are You Measuring Your Success Against Others?

Are You Measuring Your Success Against Others?

I was recently speaking with a client, and when I asked what he used to measure success, he replied that he wanted to be just as successful as his brother, if not more so.

This may sound like a reasonable goal, however, the reality is that measuring success against others is the wrong mindset.

Put another way, identifying and measuring our own individual success results not from comparing who we are or what we have against others; instead it results from defining who we want to become as an individual, definitively and constructively.

Consider how you measure success as compared to the following questions:

1. Do you measure your achievements based on setting your own goals or pursuing similar goals to others?

Example: "I want to have a job and home like John does."

2. Do you compare and justify your inability to achieve goals against those around you, making you feel more comfortable in the process?

Example: "I wasn't able to finish the program, but neither were Sally or Frank."

3. Do you take a sheltered and close-minded view as to how to pursue success?

Example: "I just need to do what Julie does to be successful!"

4. Do you reject outside views on achieving success that differ from yours?

Example: "I'm not finishing this book because it's too far out there for me."

Success results from being open-minded and holding a broad and fluid view of the world and those within it. As the old saying goes there is more than one way to skin a cat (no I don’t mean that literally!)

It's all in perception. We are too focused on increasing esteem when in reality esteem is built through our experiences. We need to become adept at taking bold actions which in turn build our confidence and in turn our esteem grows.
