You Measure How You Spend Your Time. But Do You Measure What You Spend Your Thoughts On?

You Measure How You Spend Your Time. But Do You Measure What You Spend Your Thoughts On?

The other day, while enjoying my morning coffee, a thought struck me: What truly stands between us and our most ambitious goals? Is it the obstacles we face, or could it be something within us? And the advice of knowing what % of your time do you spend on things in your weekly schedule, you may measure that. But as importantly do you keep a check on how much time you think about the future experiences and excitement or how much time as a comparison to the obstacles and fears?

Meet Ben, a professional who's always dreamed of running workshops for Fathers and Sons. The idea of holding his own workshops motivated him like nothing else. He imagined the event, the detail, even the experiences of participants at the end of a long weekend. His excitement was palpable.

But as he sat down to start structuring the business plan and detail, doubts crept in. What if no one is interested in it the way I am? What if it's not good enough? The blank page seemed more like a wall than a canvas. Each day, Ben found himself dwelling more on these fears or obstacles than on his original goal and time was his enemy with a current business and busy family life.

One afternoon, we chatted over lunch, and I asked him, "Ben, what's stronger right now, your desire to facilitate these workshops or your fear of the challenges?" He paused, realising he'd been giving more power to his obstacles and lack of time than to his aspirations.

We discussed shifting his focus back to his passion for Father Son relationships. He began setting small, daily goals, just one thing a day. By redirecting his energy toward his motivation, he found his stride. The structure flowed, and his confidence grew.

Today, Ben is well on the way as an accomplished facilitator of stronger Father and Son relationships, and seeing his name as an accomplished facilitator? Absolutely priceless.

?So, let me ask you:

  • What's the goal you wish to achieve?
  • What motivates you to pursue this goal?
  • What's the biggest challenge or obstacle in your way?
  • Do you spend more time focusing on your goal or on the obstacles?

Remember, whichever is greater, your motivation to achieve your goal or your fear of the challenges, will ultimately prevail. If you find your obstacles are overshadowing your goals, it might be time to shift your mindset. Work it so your motivation is always greater than the fear or obstacles.

Have an Awesome Day.
