It's important to have [some] people like you. Promotions, raises, new hires, all depend on not just doing good work, but people liking us, too. But, it's equally to make some enemies, too. Because that means you're valuing YOU, as you deserve:
- Enemy #1-"Jennifer"'s job grew to include Operations Manager work, but without the job title and salary. Jennifer asked "Tina" for a raise. Tina said, "I'll think about it." When Jennifer asked for a raise again, Tina said, "No, that's too close to what I make." ?? When Jennifer quit, Tina was like, "After all I've done for you, you're leaving?!" Jennifer felt guilty. But, I told Jennifer she owes Tina NOTHING and Tina was a horrible person trying to hold Jennifer back, professionally. Tina is Jennifer's enemy.
- Enemy #2-"Henry" worked in an accounting firm for 18 years. The firm was sold. The new owners "Rob" and "Mark" wanted Henry to stay, but only if he was willing to a. Train new talent; b. Take a pay cut. Henry declined. He was fired. It was Henry's first time ever being fired, he felt horrible. I told Henry to never give his self-esteem to any job because we are not our jobs. It took Henry 4 months to get another job. Then, Rob and Mark asked him to come back, they offered 30% raise. Nope. Rob and Mark are enemies.
- Enemy #3-"Kim" and "Sheila" worked together and were friends. But Sheila noticed that whenever she talked about doing something different, such as applying for promotion, getting a new job, going back to for her Master's, Kim had negative comments. Sheila ended up getting a new job and was accepted to a Master's program (in Nursing). Kim had nothing positive to say. I told Kim Sheila was against her and she needed to remove that negative energy. Sheila, eventually, cut all communication with Kim. Kim wasn't supportive of Sheila: She's an enemy.
To paraphrase FDR, "Judge you by the enemies you've made." If people aren't for you achieving greatness, they're against you achieving greatness. Treat them, accordingly. They're enemies.
