Are You Making a Mistake by Hiring Over-Qualified Employees?

Hiring overqualified employees may have some perks like broader talent pool and higher expectation but it can often backfire on the organizations.
Overqualified employees may get bored at their roles which they no more find challenging.
This can be easily seen in their behavior. Giving them a task which is not suitable for their role can make them irritated of the leads and they often feel it as attacking their self-respect and ego. They don't show enough willingness to take directions from seniors. Feedbacks are often not taken positively.
This leads the over-qualified employees to become short-tempered, impatient and rebellious which gets passed on to other employees and even clients.
Yesterday I revisited to a decent restaurant with my friends where we were served by 2 waiters. One was a regular guy while other was new. He was seemingly more educated, trained and experienced. He was dressed sharp was speaking fluent English.
While ordering the food we mentioned the same modification which we always do to the new waiter. He simply denied. He started explaining the technicalities, challenges and what not to deny our request. We requested that we always order the same thing and never faced any issue but he still didn't even bother to confirm with the chef.
His tone was now feeling impolite to ears.
We confined to his will, ordered the food. After some time he came with our food. He was very elegant, served us very nicely using the chopsticks, arranging our plates and spoons. He was obviously pretty good at what he does.
While we were eating our food it started feeling very hot and we realized that the AC was not working. We complained to him about the temperature and, he simply ignored as he passed by use saying "AC is broken" without even looking at us.
After some time a couple came at the table beside us. Our old waiter was serving them. The couple complained in English about temperature as well. The waiter came to them and apologized in the local language as he was not able to speak English, regretted the inconvenience and promised to shift them to a new table when available.
There is one thing I realized that time
While the Educated and trained employees can guarantee client satisfaction, the overqualified employee may often do the exact opposite if they place the respect of their skills at the tip of the mountain while leaving the respect for their duty at the foot.
I believe that both must go hand in hand because while
Mere respect for the job without skills make you irrelevant and unwanted and the mere respect for your kills without respect for your job will make you rude.
For the employers, if you find someone who fits this description, it is better to take some time to understand the expectations of these employees, their future prospects.
Talk to them about what you can offer them and give them a rough idea about what they can expect.
It may sound unreasonable to let go of a highly qualified employee but imagine what happens if you hire him by paying extra and if he is not satisfied you end up losing your budget, an important position in your company as he won't be doing any good to your organization. Moreover, there is also a risk that we will hamper the morale of existing employees as well which is far worse than letting that one employee go in the first place.

5 年Ameya, An interesting perspective. In my line of work, many of the topics are a six month to five year learning curve. I actively train my replacements, but it takes constant watching to make sure the individuals get opportunities to learn. For some topics, it is only after they experience the specific work do I have the opportunity to further our conversations. For that new waiter who brushed you off, the individual sounds like they were not hungry enough to provide solid service which answered your needs. As a new waiter, I have to wonder if they had that experience before and are now a new waiter.
