Are You Making These LinkedIn Profile Mistakes?
5 Mistakes That Make You Nearly Invisible to Your Ideal Client (or Employer)

Are You Making These LinkedIn Profile Mistakes?

I want to let you in on a little secret.

There’s a good chance you are camouflaging yourself and your business from those of us who’d happily pay you for your superpowers. But, sadly, we can’t see how special you are, because you look like a million other Clark Kents, clothed in the monkey-see, monkey-do LinkedIn dress code.

Those who put themselves out there in an engaging, authentic way are the well-paid heroes. Those who don’t, go home frustrated. Here are 5 things that’ll help you know if you need to change it up a bit:

1.     If your “About” section starts like this: “Seasoned _____________ with a demonstrated history in _________________. Skilled in __________________, __________________, and _____________. Proven track record in ___________________.

OMG. Please change this today. It sounds like the nerd at the dance and does not communicate your true value.

2.     If your profile picture is any of these: Your company logo. An emoji. You, as a cartoon caricature. You, with a “hacked-off-at-the-world” frown on your face. You with some dude’s hand on your shoulder from a cropped after-party photo.

3.     If the company icons in your experience section look like this: If you’ve been assigned the standard ugly gray icon next to your title at your current and previous companies, then you don’t have a company page set up or you haven’t connected your profile to your firm.

It communicates incompleteness and a lack of attention to detail.

4.     If you have no recommendations: If you have no or very few recommendations, it makes folks wonder if you’re credible and competent. Social proof from others is the most powerful way to build trust and credibility. Take time to ask those you've truly helped to write an honest recommendation for you on LinkedIn.

5.     If you have 29 connections: If you’re not well networked (yet), start reaching out to others consistently and invite them to connect. Call out your lack of connections in an honest way. Tell them how you see yourself collaborating and helping them, but do NOT make it a sales pitch.

Investing some effort in these five areas to optimize your LinkedIn profile will show the world the real you—radiating pure awesomeness.

But not in a cheesy kind of way. You’ll be the person that paralyzes the scrolling finger of your next employer or ideal client and causes them to lean forward and say to themselves, “You’re the one.”

May you be in a constant state of victory,

Dale
