In our final issue of the Bulletin in November, I wrote about different campaign bidding strategies. That dove into the new Scheduled Rules section, which is a big deal because it's the first time we’ve seen a dayparting tool from Amazon.

Since then, I’ve received a few questions on that topic, so I’d like to take a minute to address them:

Q: Does Pathfinder actually use the Schedule Rules feature?

A: No, we do not. I highlighted it because readers might want to understand what this brand new feature is and try it out. We’re excited to see dayparting even in this basic implementation.

Q: What would it take for you to actually use it?

A: The ability to decrease bids in a campaign rather than just increase them. Just that change alone, and we’d be testing Scheduled Rules right now.

Q: Is dayparting a good idea?

A: Like many things with PPC advertising, it's at least worth devoting budget and time towards testing it. If it works for your combination of product catalog and customers, it can save you significant amounts of money and help your ads appear at more relevant times to more people throughout most of the day. Note also that dayparting is available on dozens of other digital ad platforms and has been for years. This is not a new concept.

Q: Well since you don’t use Schedule Rules, how do you daypart?

A: To summarize quickly, we use the Intentwise software, which aggregates hourly data from Amazon Marketing Stream, and then sets a series of time-triggered rules that make bid changes to specific campaigns. This allows us to make those changes at the product level, where you see the biggest impact of this strategy.?

Q: Does it actually work?

A: Yes! But you need enough ad spend to create enough data on a per-product level to make a decision about what hours would benefit from changes. There is a period of evaluation after setting up your rules that you need to observe too, while making sure to not let events like Prime Day spoil your test.

These tests include multiple high drops, enduring extreme weights over 30,000 pounds, and simulations of rough handling and various weather conditions.
