Are You Making These 6 Mistakes When Hiring a Ghostwriter or Copywriter?

Are You Making These 6 Mistakes When Hiring a Ghostwriter or Copywriter?

Most coaches get to a point where they are SICK of writing everything themselves...

You started business to have an impact and COACH, not spend all day writing.

So you start looking for a Ghostwriter, Copywriter or Email Marketer...

Yeah you’ve probably hired one of these guys before.

Maybe they nailed your voice to a T.

Or maybe they sounded like an AI autofill instead of YOU.

Perhaps it worked once, but most people end up hiring the wrong writer.

These are 6 red flags to look for when hiring your next content or email writer:

#1: They don’t post their own content

How can you trust someone to write YOUR content if their own content is… invisible??

And what the hell have they been doing to LEARN how to write?

Maybe they put the "Ghost" in Ghostwriting...

But this is relevant to the type of content they offer, of course.

If they focus on emails — READ THEIR EMAILS!

If they build a funnel, CHECK OUT THEIR FUNNEL.

If they create memes for a living — YOU BETTER BE LAUGHING!

Use common sense. If their profile is deader than a goldfish in space, ignore them.

How could they nail your voice, if they can’t even find their own?

#2: They use solely AI writing or SUCK in their own content

Maybe they DO post content… 5 times a day.

Hmmmm…. suspicious!

Oh wait look at that —

Here’s the truth:

Maybe they write like this…

“Our groundbreaking service boosts your business visibility through top-tier, innovative strategies. We leverage cutting-edge technology to enhance your digital presence, ensuring unparalleled satisfaction with our comprehensive solutions.”

And you just KNOW it’s a pile of garbage from ChatGPT.

They’re pumping out content fast and hard, but with NO human touch whatsoever…

Is that really the kind of brand you want?

While others pump out robotic content, I combine AI with deep audience research and tone analysis to create content that actually sounds like YOU.

Every piece of content should help your readers discover something new about you, or your style.

#3: They don’t have their own funnel or content marketing system

If you’re speaking to a writer or marketer and they DON’T have any plans or system for funnelling new leads…

They’re likely winging it without a clue.

If all they have is a (mediocre) LinkedIn profile and a Calendly link, they don’t know what they’re doing.

Where is their lead magnet? Is it attractive? Would you value it?

Have they got an email list?

If they don’t, how could they help you grow yours…

And if a funnel is what you want, so you can get back your time from your business…

You need someone who can BUILD funnels (the right way).

I’ve studied and implemented funnels for over 2,000 hours and spent $7,000+ to learn from the best.

Ask yourself — do you want any less than the best for your business?

4#: You’ve never seen a long-form piece of writing from them

All they write are short platitudes, stories about their dog and generic posts…

Uh oh. Not good.

If you can’t see ANY long-form writing from them that displays their skills or personality,

I’d steer clear.

You need some level of “deeper” content with them to know you can trust them.

It’s all well and good posting selfies every day…

But can they WRITE?

If you want an example of GOOD long-form writing…

5#: They don’t have ANY testimonials or endorsements

This is a big one, and pretty obvious… but most Ghostwriters don’t get testimonials.

So how can you tell if they’re good?

I’d refer to the previous steps… but it’s always easier to pick someone who has social proof.

If they don’t have ANY recommendations, testimonials, reviews or endorsements?

It’s unlikely that they’re experienced in their industry.

They might need some more time or clients.

And look for testimonials that specifically mention their ability to get inside the client’s head…

Authentic writing isn’t just about how persuasive they are.

When my clients talk about my work, they always mention one thing — my ability to write like them.

That’s the kind of endorsement you should look for...

6#: They write or market for ANYONE anywhere

If their profile or work talks about working with PEOPLE or very broad niches, like “leaders”…

Then it’s unlikely they’re experienced or highly skilled, especially if they miss some of the other steps.

Most experienced writers know that they need to niche down to be the best.

Instead of working with “coaches” — work with a specific type of coach.

Instead of working with anyone they can get their hands on — they should work with one person.

A type of person they can serve the best.

So if they don’t have a target customer clearly outlined in their profile,

They might just be figuring out their own business.

And you wouldn’t be best served if you got them to do your unique content.

You need someone who markets for the niche you’re in…

Hope this helps…

Great insights! Hiring the wrong writer can indeed ruin a brand's reputation. It's important to find someone who not only understands your voice but also your brand's values and goals. One thing to keep in mind is to look for a writer who is willing to collaborate and communicate effectively with you. This way, you can ensure that the content produced aligns with your vision and resonates with your target audience. Another tip is to ask for writing samples and references to gauge the writer's skills and experience. Ultimately, finding the right writer can help you scale your business and attract your ideal clients.

I have not known Zac for long but I can tell you that he has this unique honesty that is refreshing in combination with his own style but the ability to adapt. I spend a fair amount of time running my business and putting content out myself so I only have time to read a couple articles a week so I tend to spend my time reading those I can learn from. Way to land the plane on this one and I look forward to your next.
