Are You Making These 6 Common Mistakes as a Freelance SEO Writer?

I don't know how many times I've read articles by freelancers complaining that they can't find work. Or that they're not getting paid what they're worth. Or that no one will hire them because their writing isn't good enough.

When it comes to freelance SEO writing, many of us tend to make these six common mistakes that could lead to you asking yourself the above questions:

  1. Depending too much on SEO Tools

SEO tools are easy to use and can bring you traffic if used correctly. But relying on them too much may not be the best approach. SEO tools can make you lazy in the sense that you don’t have to do your own research and instead believe whatever they suggest.

From my experience, if you write what your audience wants to know, you may never see the need to use SEO tools. If you make your audience happy, Google will always reward you.

2. Not Recognizing you have a Personal Brand to Build

Your brand is your identity and selling tool as a freelance SEO writer. If you get into freelance SEO writing without first acquiring the right skills and getting your brand out there, you may have a hard time finding success.

What's more, you’ll realize your true potential once you start focusing on your brand.?

Your brand will make finding clients much simpler, not to mention that your prowess and skills will be evident in all the SEO content you create.

3. Boxing Yourself in a Specific Niche when Starting Out?

I know niching down helps build authority and your knowledge about specific topics. But, if you're just starting out in freelance SEO writing, niching down may limit your creative capabilities.?

As a beginner in freelance SEO writing, you need to stay open and ready to explore and write content for various niches. Later on, you can decide what works for you and niche down.?

If you can learn how to quickly study and take in information then relay that back in the form of a content piece and do that for just about any topic, you'll be invaluable for anyone looking for a freelance writer.

Reread that freelance generalists’ quote.?

4. Writing free samples for clients

If you're serious about building a personal brand as a freelance SEO writer, you should have a decent portfolio to showcase your talent to your potential clients. Any client who sees your portfolio should be able to gauge your capabilities and see if you're a perfect fit for them.

So instead of wasting time writing free samples, use that time to optimize that LinkedIn profile or your writer's website.?

5. Not Constantly Looking for Clients?

Freelancing is dynamic and highly unpredictable. Today you have clients that pay you like the expert SEO writer you are but tomorrow they're nowhere to be found. Take an active role in seeking new clients even if you have a lot on your plate to grow your SEO freelance business.

But even as you continually look for clients, don't forget that keeping the current ones happy is also crucial.

6. Sticking with Underpaying Clients

Premium SEO content is not cheap as there's much that goes into creating it.

So, you're doing more than good keeping up with that client who underpays you. Understand your value and adjust your pricing accordingly.?

Trust me, there're clients out there willing to appreciate the efforts you put into creating premium SEO content.
