YOU MAKE IT TOO PERFECT

Small amount of imperfections can help to sell a good idea. Came across this interesting story recently. The advertising executive makes a picture-perfect pitch to the client and at the end, client says, “Let me think about it”. Executive is disappointed and goes to the boss and says, “Boss what happened!” Boss says, “You make it too perfect”. The person who is also part of the team on this campaign, wants to contribute but is not able to add value which gave the feelings that there must be something wrong so let me delay a bit and think about it.
Boss then looks at his presentation and says, “You know that in the ad campaign you have made there is person who is holding the product, make that person arm hairy.” So, the person can see that hairy arm and comment by saying, get rid of that hairy-arm and we are fine. That way, the person feels he is contributing in the process and take ownership.
At the same time, the most important thing to remember is that you don’t want to start with the hairy-arm in the beginning of the pitch, the first impression matters so you don’t want to be seen as incompetent.
But some time a small amount of imperfections might help to sell a great idea.
