Are You Low on Bandwidth?

Have you ever noticed the more you have on your mind, the harder it is to give what you're trying to focus on your full attention?
?I know I've certainly been in that situation more times than I can count.
?I was speaking to one of my clients recently about how, when they were trying to focus on an important task they were finding their attention wandering.
They found by the end of the day, they'd not achieved anywhere near what they'd hoped to.
?So we started talking about how having a busy mind could interrupt your creative flow, your focus and affect your overall performance.
It got me thinking about my wifi system at home.
?I have a pretty good broadband package, but even so, I notice when I connect too many devices to it, things start to go slower or start to buffer.
?In other words, the performance suffers.
?I believe that's like our thinking. If we have too many thoughts on our mind at any one time, our performance starts to suffer.
?To get the wifi working at its optimum I probably need to remove some of those devices. Then I should start to notice the performance improve on the devices that are still connected.
?Alternately with the wifi, I could most likely upgrade the broadband package to get even more bandwidth.
?However, our minds don't come with an upgrade package and we also tend to have our own unique amount of mental bandwidth we can cope with.
?So the answer can't be to add more bandwidth to our minds but to remove some of the thoughts clogging up the bandwidth we're already using.
?Just like removing devices from the wifi, so the performance improves.

My client brought up a great point.
?What if I'm working, I'm focused and in the creative flow.
?Then suddenly a thought pops up and it's something that needs my attention and I'm afraid if I don't give it my attention now, I'll forget about it later.
?I suggested having a pad & pen by your workspace. Then if a random thought pops in that needs actioning, stop what you're doing momentarily.
?Write down the thought.
?Now it's recorded you can let the thought go and get back to your creative flow.
?Safe in the knowledge that you can come back and action what you've written in the pad, at an appropriate time.
?I hope you've found some value in what I've shared.
?Love Mike

3 年I love this analogy Mike, we have limited bandwidth and a tendency to overload the server, even more, when we are stressed. It's counterintuitive to slow down, but it's actually the best way to get into the zone and that sweet spot of performance. Great article. Thanks for sharing.
