You Lost Your Job, Now What?

Most people that have been employed have experienced being let go at some point in their career.

For myself….

I can still remember the day in September of 2020 - we had been working from home since March because of the pandemic and we were in a good grove and routine - sales were the best they had been in years and we were launching new products.

Part of my routine was to get up early, take a quick walk around the neighborhood, but when I got home from my morning walk, I had 20-30 text messages from friends wanting to know how the news was going to impact my job.

I had no idea what they were talking about!

Next came a flood of App alerts from our local news channels about how our Headquarters was moving to a new city and state and that it would impact many positions.

At that point, I just sat there very confused…so I checked my email and sure enough, there was an email from leadership talking about the move and how it would impact my/our employment.

After 20 years of service, I found out from friends and app alerts that I was most likely out of a job before it was announced internally.

This was the first time I had felt like a number in the past 20 years.

What followed next are five different emotions we all experience and go through…

?? Confusion - why was this happening

?? Anger - I can’t believe that happened - how could they

?? Sadness - all the memories and now it would be gone

?? Detached - moving away emotionally

?? Acceptance - it has happened, mentally accepting to move on

Before looking for that next opportunity, make sure you allow yourself the time to deal and understand your emotions. This will allow yourself the ability to put a good plan in place and to give all your attention to your new job search.

Taking care of yourself and having a good support system is very important during all of this. Allow yourself the ability to go through the stages of emotions - this will enable you to focus on your plan for your future with a good mental approach.

For a job seeker, many jobs may not be listed, and it becomes who you know instead of what you know.

Relationships, connections and recommendations become very important in that search and those start with daily networking. How many times have you heard of someone getting a job because someone else recommended them? A lot!
