Are you looking for work?

Are you looking for work?

Seems like a lot of people are.

And you know what they're all doing?

The same thing you are.

Every single person I've talked to over 13 years who is unemployed and looking for work says to me:

  • I'm applying to everything.
  • I'm reaching out to my network.
  • I'm contacting who I think are the hiring managers.
  • I'm listening to content creators on LinkedIn.
  • I've had my resume redone.

Those are all the things that everyone already knows about - in most cases they are a waste of time - a waste of money - and bad advice.

Applying to everything

  • 100's or 1000's of your closest friends are also applying.

Your network

  • They might not have thought all that highly of you in the first place.

Contacting Hiring Managers

  • I speak from very specific experience that almost 100% of proactive job seekers are absolutely terrible at this.

Content Creators

  • If you're listening to someone who says "you should do this because this is who I like to hire" - that's great - if you're about to go in an interview with that person.

Resume

  • 6 seconds

Over the next 5 weeks we'll examine these topics in more detail.

If you think it's valuable or you have something to add - we'd love to hear your thoughts.

Following traditional advice and applying to every job or relying on your network is easy but often ineffective. I believe going against the grain may take more effort, but it yields better results.

Thank you so much for sharing!John SchmidtI just wanted to let you know about this amazing job search tool called F1 Hire. It's really helpful for international students looking for H1B jobs. The AI-powered features like resume improving and job description analysis are spot on! I definitely recommend giving it a try.

Interesting take on how to search for jobs and job search process. I am curious what you tell people who are employed for months on end with no prospects no leads in sight.
