Are You Looking For Greatness?

Are You Looking For Greatness?

Everyone has strengths.

But not everyone is aware of them.

As a leader, it's your job to identify personal strengths in others and highlight them.

In the words of Gallup, an optimal team is everyone sitting in the right seat on the right bus.

Some individuals will have more talent than others, but a great manager sees potential in every team member.

Let's face it...it's hard to self-evaluate.

Much easier to elaborate on weaknesses than focus on strengths.

Most of us are our harshest critics, so when leaders identify strengths in you it can be a game changer.

It's not a manager's job to do the work for their teammates.

But it is a manager's role to provide direction and motivation (to a degree).

One way to motivate people is to give them tasks based on their strengths.

That is setting people up to succeed.

Think about the best managers in your life.

It's really about how they made you feel.

Hopefully, their belief in you boosted your own self-belief.

Note: don't ever lie to someone about their abilities.

That's like the parent who tells their kids they are the best at everything until reality hits.

Great leaders understand when each part (team member) is functioning at its peak, the team is strongest.

To be honest, with some people it's hard to find what makes them stand out.

So that's where you have to dip deep, be observant, and ask around.

Like a detective looking for clues to solve a mystery, great leaders make it their mission to empower their people.

When you are outward-focused on developing others, you're less focused on yourself (selfish).

Remember leadership is a privilege.

The best way to serve your team is by unlocking their ability to thrive in specific areas.

That way everyone wins.

Great leaders build great teams one individual at a time.

Time to get to work.

Great counsel, Scott! This reminds me of principles I recently read in Russ Laraway's book "When They Win, You Win: Being a Great Manager is Simpler Than You Think"
