Are you living life by default?
Have you ever, at the end of a week thought to yourself ‘where did the entire week go and how did it pass by’ or ‘it was just Monday a few moments back’? In our fast-paced world, it's easy to find ourselves going through the motions without fully experiencing life. We often perform our tasks mechanically, navigating our days with little or no awareness of our thoughts, actions, and surroundings. This way of living on autopilot can have detrimental effects on our well-being and hinder our ability to fully engage with the present moment.?
By cultivating mindfulness, we can breakfree from this autopilot mode and live a more conscious, purposeful life.?
Let's understand what living on autopilot may look like. It is characterized by the state of mind where we operate in a habitual, unconscious manner, driven by routines and conditioned responses. We may find ourselves going through the daily routines of our lives without truly being present, missing out on the richness and depth of each experience. This is often a result of the demands of our busy lives, multitasking and being constantly distracted by technology.?
Living life on default can have significant consequences on our well-being. It can increase stress levels, contribute to feelings of dissatisfaction and burnout, and diminish our ability to connect with ourselves and others. By not being fully present in the moment, we miss opportunities for growth, joy and meaningful connections.?
Mindfulness is the antidote to this unconscious way of living. It lays emphasis on intentionally paying attention to the present moment, with a curious, open and non-judgemental approach. This may look like opening our hands to the current moment and fully immersing ourselves in it, letting it happen to us and feel it entirely. To relate, consider the example of taking a cold shower. You feel slightly afraid to open the taps because you anticipate the cold water coming on and then feel the freezing drops on your body that make you fidget but you still remain there and experience each moment of cold water on yourself refreshing your body and mind.?
Through mindfulness, we become more aware of our thoughts, emotions and sensations, as well as the world around us. By doing so, we open ourselves up to greater clarity, joy, and appreciation of life’s simple pleasures. Practicing mindfulness also helps us develop a deeper understanding of ourselves, enhance our relationships, and make conscious choices aligned with our values. It allows us to savor the beauty of life and find meaning in each experience.?
