Will you be living in electric dreams by the end of this year?

In 1985 Ronald Reagan won his second term, a feat Donald Trump is trying to emulate, assuming he doesn’t kill himself by drinking bleach first but 1985 was famous for some other things, even more amazing in their own way than an actor winning a second term and as cabin fever in lockdown has forced me to revisit my teenage record collection via apple music it made me wonder how many of us would be living in electric dreams at the end of 2020?

You see 1985 wasn’t just the year we realised George Orwell had absolutely missed the mark, it was also the year the Titanic was discovered, a little perhaps like discovering a car running on leaded fuel today! It was also the year New York made seatbelts a legal requirement, 35 years on we are debating if drivers even need to drive at all!

Speaking of historical artefacts Blockbuster was founded, I remember it well, walking to my local store to browse the VHS or later driving in one of the most popular cars, the Metro, I had the MG version which basically meant it just rusted away quicker. MG had gone the same way as Blockbuster and become a thing of fable but have recently become a household name with a remarkable entry level electric car, the MG ZS, a lovely SUV which is under £300 a month all in on salary sacrifice schemes covering 125 miles on one charge.

Of course MG are just evolving old ideas, in 1985 Clive Sinclair (a boffin who invented an affordable computer that doubled up as an eraser for homework errors) invented the C5, a electric vehicle covering 20 miles if you went downhill and had scary performance, scary as it was about as high as a car tyre and virtually invisible to a bus or lorry!

However back to my journey down memory lane to bad hair and neon shirts! When Phil Oakley released this masterpiece (ahem) little could he know that I would be listening to this in my I pace 35 years later thinking about a blog! But here we are, I am living my electric dream and I want you too to! We have time to dream, a lot of us are homebound (I was popping to the office to grab the post), but we’re noticing how clean the air is, how blue the sky is, and how much we’re saving on petrol and not missing filling up!

Amidst business downturns electric cars are on a big up, they promise to preserve the blue hue in the sky whilst delivering you to your destination in an exhilarating way with no disturbance to that electro sound from a gruff engine. They protect your wallet as well as the planet and more and more come out every month from the Skoda Citigo to the Porsche Taycan.

Anyway back to my ipace, because we’ll always be together, however far it seems (with 27,000 charge points in the UK), we’ll always be together, at least until the VW Buzz is released…sorry ruined it!

Thanks Andrew, I now have a Phil Oakey earworm! Amazing how far we have come, I can't imagine where we will be in 35 more...

You, sir, have put a smile on my face, and forced me to get my old records out too!!!!! Like you, I'm looking forward to the VW, but worry about it's trendiness, especially down here! Do you have a release date on it yet?
