Are you listening?

Are you listening?

Nature speaks many languages. Sometimes it gives a silent nudge. Sometimes a gentle push. And sometimes a violent tremor.

On each occasion it is trying to send out a message.

But in communication, the message depends on the receptivity of the receiver, and many a times we ignore the friendly alerts, the gentle warnings, and wake up from our slumber only when the magnitude of the calamity is severe.

Businesses are not exempt from these interventions but just like we rush to a doctor only when the pain becomes unbearable, businesses are guilty of being reactive rather than proactive.

The rules of the game are universal and tweaked as per the times. The foundation principles remain the same.

However good times tend to make business lax: poor habits and wrong practices seep in. They are submerged under the cover of good times, but simmering below.

And when the winds change, they surface with their ugly head, and force you to drop everything else and counter them.

The current adverse scenario is unique and no one could be expected to be prepared for it. However just like a healthy person with better immunity is better equipped to counter the pandemic, businesses which have been tight and not let themselves become lax, reap the benefits of their internal good practices.

The last two decades have witnessed a sea change in the way businesses are run. From manufacturing to marketing, from customers to customisation, from technology to tactics, every sphere of business is changing rapidly to make it look a pale shadow of its last century avatar.

The medical fraternity is fighting a tough battle to slow down the doubling rate of the infected, but the entire business community hasn't been able to slow down the pace at which the change is engulfing the businesses, and how they are run.

Fundamentals and foundations are the pillars that not only keep you above the sea, but also provide the base to build your bridges of growth.

Nature has spoken again. To the lucky few it's been a nudge. To many it's a wakeup call. And some have borne a severe brunt.

However, those who read, absorb, and implement the message will look back at this time with fond memories while others would sadly fade into history.
